Imagine: you are hiking in the forest with some friends and carelessly throw away a glass bottle or the rest of your cigarette. what can happen in a forest?
Right it can burn and this is exactly what happened on the 20.9.20. A group of hikers was out in the wilderness. due to the refreshing winds a fire started, which trapped the hikers.
Since one unit alone could not take care of extinguishing the fire and rescuing the hikers, this was a collaboration of several organizations. Besides the Cannery Cove Fire Department, the Coast Guard was also involved in the rescue.
Near the forest fire, an aircraft carrier was positioned from where the helicopters took off and brought injured people to the temporary hospital. When the Somke Jumpers were flown into the area of operation and fulfilled their part of the task, namely to find the hiking group, the rest had to wait.
After some time had passed, the all-clear was given, all persons are alive and in good condition. The Coast Guard then had the task to evacuate the found hiking group and bring them to the aircraft carrier, where the medical first aid took place.
Then suddenly there was a hectic atmosphere on the airfield. Over the radio we could hear that a helicopter crashed and the pilot needs help.
The Coast Guard reacted immediately and rescued the seriously injured person.
The conclusion of the search and rescue mission was: 4 uninjured, 4 lightly injured and 1 seriously injured.
At this point I can only say that it was a very nice exercise that I saw and was well organized by the SLR-SAR “Second Life Regional SAR”.
