What a wonderful event to start my new position in. As the Yeoman to the PAO, I was honored to get this gift. I feel I can make a difference. I am extremely lucky to be working with LTJG Yalene Hansen PAO. LTJG Hansen is an amazing team leader and she has taught me so much in the short time we are working together.
Some history about the Relay For Life. Relay For Life is a community-based fundraising event for the American Cancer Society and many other Cancer related institutions, societies and associations. Each year, more than 5,000 Relay For Life events take place in over twenty countries. Events are held in local communities, university campuses and in virtual campaigns.
As the American Cancer Society’s most successful fundraiser and the organization’s signature event, the mission of Relay For Life is to raise funds to improve cancer survival, decrease the incidence of cancer, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their caretakers.
Relay For Life began in the USA in May 1985 when colorectal surgeon, Dr. Gordy Klatt, wanted to raise awareness of cancer and boost the income of his local cancer charity. He spent a gruelling twenty-four hours circulating a track in Tacoma, Washington, and raised over US$27,000, and showed that one person really can make a difference. Since then, Relay For Life has become the largest fundraising event for cancer in the world. Celebrated by more than 4 million people in over 20 countries, this inspirational overnight event empowers and unites local communities to fight cancer.
Our Relay For Life team has outdone itself within one month. We have reached gold level. We have collected over 160,000 Lindens as well as over $1330.00 USD. We are so proud of our team and all our Creators who have given so much to make this the best Relay for Life ever.
We also had a wonderful Game Night Event as well as a fantastic benefit concert by our own Donatella which will be featured in our next month’s SLCG Magazine.
