The July 2020 graduation saw a bumper crop of SRs promote to PO3s under the warm sun. Five graduates did SLCG proud with their commitment to service and achievement during rotations. Four were available to share their unique perspectives with the Magazine, demonstrating that even while busy on the water, they are excited to be part of SLCG! Make sure to say “Hi!” to them and see if you can do anything to help them along their journey in our family. Remember to pay it forward!

Why did you join SLCG?
I decided to join the SL Coast Guard for two reasons. The first for real motivation thats been a part of me from a very young age. My background is in civil defense, rescue groups, fighting forest fires in the park, and nature reserves of my country (Venezuela), as well as maritime activities, sailing, deep-sea fishing and diving (SCUBA). The second comes from fantasy, since I have always been excited by those movies where the Coast Guard, with her brave pilots and divers (among others), worked to rescue and help all those who needed it in the waters of the ocean. So what better opportunity to somehow make that fantasy come true? “Second Life!” I found the answer when I was fishing on an island in the Blake Sea and I saw a boat pass that said SL Coast Guard. At that moment my work began to enter this prestigious institution. Today I feel really happy and honored to belong to it.
What do you hope to do at SLCG? What is your ultimate goal, if you have one?
In reality, it is premature to know what my final objective will be within the SLCG. However, the short and medium-term goals that I plan to achieve include training as a parachutist in the Falcons group, as well as training in SLCG radio communications and diving. This way I can carry out the SAR training which is what motivated me most to enter SLCG. Of course, for this you must also achieve a good deal of knowledge of the organizational structure of the institution and its operations.
Did your SLCG view or perspective change after joining? If so, how?
Of course it changed and even still I am impressed, I thought before entering that it was a group that emulates the activities of the Royal Coast Guard. But I never imagined an organization of such magnitude and authenticity to exist in a virtual world.

Why did you join SLCG?
I joined SLCG for the challenge of having new experiences and learning, not only for the activities, but also for the language that is not my native tongue. I am learning a lot.
What do you hope to do at SLCG? What is your ultimate goal, if you have one?
My goal, besides learning, is to add to the group some of my knowledge and help it to grow even more. I want to go as far as possible or even higher! I know I am capable and determined, without passing or denigrating anyone, that’s not how I conduct myself.
Did your SLCG view or perspective change after joining? If so, how?
Only me, in my first passage, I was not very well in RL, so I could not give much time to SL, but now it is a wonderful experience, many friends, activities and a large friendliness of all coasties, I’m loving it!

Why did you join SLCG?
Well I guess to answer that I would have to start before SL was ever thought of. I am a Vet of the U.S. Army. I used to be airborne infantry (11B1P) and I loved my 7 years on active duty. I was looking for a similar bond and brotherhood that I had all those years ago. Nothing can ever compare to the real thing; heck being in infantry the man to my left and right might one day sacrifice their life for you, and I would have, without hesitation, done the same for them. So I was looking for something similar here in Second Life. The military way of life, the time honored traditions and something to be proud of!
What do you hope to do at SLCG? What is your ultimate goal, if you have one?
My goal in the Second Life Coast Guard is to try and make it a better organization then before I joined. All the schools and training are very cool benefits of being a part of the SLCG, but to get right down to it my goal is to try and make it a better outfit, no matter how small my contributions may be.
Did your SLCG view or perspective change after joining? If so, how?
I want to go whereever I may be needed. Whether thats being an instructor, an XO, or just a good coastie making my CO’s job easier and less stressful. That hasn’t changed since I joined.

Why did you join the SLCG?
I always had the dream of being part of the Navy, and being part of the Coast Guard is the closest I will get to that. But now that I am in, I see a much greater future with all the various activities that is much broader than the Navy, and besides, you get to save lives in the process. I like the adrenaline rush from the adventures and see each new challenge as an adventure, as it is never the same. Each is unique in its own way, and I find it exciting and makes me feel alive.
What do you hope to do at SLCG? What is your ultimate goal, if you have one?
To be a well-qualified member and asset to the SLCG. I want to work my way to the top, and I think “Captain” will ring well with my name.
Did your SLCG view or perspective change after joining? If so, how?
Oh yes, I see a big difference. In the beginning there was a lot of uncertainty. Now that you start moving in and become part of a station that works as one unit, things are more relaxed and become easier to deal with. It is like having a family looking out for each other. It is just wonderful.
